Bulova Stratford Mantel Clock Wkeywestminster Chime

Bulova 'stratford' mantel clock with '8 day' key wind and westminster chime 1875joseph bulova (23), immigrant from bohemia, opened small jewelry shop on maiden lane in new york cit, 1911began selling clocks and fine watches 1923name changed to bulova watch company, inc. 1928introduced world's first clock rdaio 1979acquired by lowes corp. 1988name changed to bulova corporation october 4, 2000bulova day in new oyrk city to honour company's 125th anniversary. We believe thsi to be in the era after 1923, but certainly before 1988. Update thank you jim for the observation with regards to the date (timeline)west gremany did not make history until 1945, and thus allowing for any industry after the war to get under waythis would certainly place the clock's production more in line with the late 40's, mid 50's, but still before 1988. West germna trade didn't really take effect until 1959 when west germany was producing 1/5th of the worlds exports in manufactured goods. There is still however some confusion with the model design, as it is identical to that of the seth thomas mantel stratford version shown below. Seth thomas was an american clockmaker of the 1800'sbulova didn't begin producing mantel clocks until 1931, nad in respect of the above timeline was manufacturing on a large scale by 1955. The movement was made by the hermle co in germany (see below update) and the west part may very well indicate an age of maybe 20+ yearsand upon further inspection we find a small date stamp on the wooden case 1988 this is certainly a design that eludes to a combination of both manufactures. The only differences between the two designs is that the boluva version is a wind up version and has key holes x3, is a 1/4 8 day chime mantel, and the glass bevel front case opens on hinges.

This is however a bulova classic breakarch-styletwo jewelled mantel clock with ebony and maple inlays, and raabic numerical dial. (see photo for the differences).

8-day key wind wood case, dark mahogany finish. Hinged brass bezel with convex glass over metal dial. Solid brass german movement. Westminster quarter-hour chime and hour strike. The bulova clack we have here on offer is in excellent shape, has original key, and instructino sheet.

There is a cabinet style door behind, that opens to reveal the movement inside, and a rather neat hidy hole for the key, papers and anything else. On the brass movement it is stamped boluva watch company inc.

Two(2) jewelsunadjustedmade in west germany#340-020. Update the #340-20 is a hermle movement (german)handshaft 33.2mm5 hammer belowbalance escapementplate size = 100 x 100mm spring driven and cost $249! Hermle makes movements for various cabinet makers and marks their name onto the movement, so often it can be found that a clock will have a hermle movement, even if it has a different name on it. Some other names made by hermle are seth thomas (the newer seth), tally industries, howard miller, mason & sullivan and others. About hermle the bulova clock is 11 3/4 high x 9 1/3 long x 4 3/4 wide. The clock face is 5 3/4 circular the bulova is missing the glass coevr in the front. These curved glass lenses can be replaced at a reasonable csot clock parts & accessoriesand we have not wound the clock to check the movement etc. The above version is a seth thomsa mantel clocks that is identical to the bulova design this handsome clock features genuine ebony & maple inlays. Arabic numerals with minute markings between the numerals the glass crystal protects the st hour and minute hands (dial cover does not open).
Cathedral quality german 4/4 chimes. Westminster and ave maria melodies. Finished in cherry on select hardwoods. All proceeds of htis auction goes to a charitable causewe are a non-for-profit charity serving the local community, homeless, and needy.
